It would seem that, despite the accelerated greying caused by the stresses and worry of the world’s biggest job in politics, American presidents actually live longer than most! According to an article in Discovery.com which quotes a study by the JMA, U.S presidents tend to live longer than average for men of their backgrounds and generations. This seems to run contrary to the received wisdom that stress and anxiety can shorten life. Of course, as we all know there are different types of stress- both good (eustress) and bad (distress) and the mental and physiological effects of each are very different.
One things is for sure, however- holding high office certainly makes your hair turn gray that much quicker! It’s not just in the States that we’ve seen this phenomenon. Us Brits will remember how quickly Tony Blair aged over the course of only 3 to 4 years, and lost his once youthfull looks very quickly- this included greying hair! Then again, the grey hair does kind of suit Mr Obama!
